Thank you to all who provided feedback and input on downvoting (voting unhelpful) abuse. We have investigated thoroughly and found that it is indeed sad but true that many of our Askville community have been subjected to downvote abuse at one point or another. Whether it’s a case of a newbie holding a grudge for an answer that wasn’t well-received, or a regular who just has decided that nothing one member says is of any value, all of this takes away from the spirit of “voting unhelpful”, and has turned it into something of a popularity contest.
It will take some time and resources to fully implement a new points and voting system, that correctly calibrates with our helpful stats. However, we don’t want anyone to “suffer” anymore, and tothat end, we are going to test something out.
Very shortly, we will remove the ability to downvote, or vote unhelpful entirely. This will last about a month. I’d like to ask for everyone to keep track of your stats, and also just see how you like not having that function. People with good stats shouldn’t be affected, and anyone who has been affected by downvote abuse should have the ability to “recoup losses”.
Again – this is a quick fix, to hopefully move things quicker in the direction of Askville being a more harmonious community. Being downvoted or voted unhelpful for a perfectly sound and well-thought-out answer is hurtful and insulting, and I know many of you have felt this way on occasion. We’ve heard you – and we agree it needs to stop!
I’m going to be reposting this as many places as possible – so please help spread the word!
Thank you again for everyone for your support and feedback. :) I’ve started a separate forum under “Site Suggestions” for this topic so please post all input here.
Have a good one!
